A Novel Idea...Read Together

Through A Novel Idea...Read Together, thousands of Deschutes County residents share the common bond of reading a selected book and participating in related cultural and literary events each spring. Donor support allows the Library to offer all events at no charge and provides copies of the year's selected books to each of the County's libraries. You are invited to become part of this legacy that is turning Deschutes County into a literary hub for Oregon. Click here for more information on sponsorship opportunities.

The 2012 Novel Idea selection will be announced at the kick-off party on January 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Bend Downtown Library. Watch for more information on the book, reader’s guide, event guide, and detailed information on programs scheduled for April 2012.

A Novel Idea…Read Together programs and author visits are designed to promote the value of reading and discussion through a compelling novel that links and builds community in common conversations. A month-long schedule of free cultural and literary events each spring attracts more than 6,000 participants. The event culminates with a visit from the selected book’s author, who presents his/her work through readings, discussions and book signings.

Past book selections have included:

  • Kapitoil
  • The Help
  • The Kite Runner
  • Bowerman & the Men of Oregon
  • Stubborn Twig
